Well it looked like the race was on. That guy who said he could put a sporster engine in a unicycle was doing just that. His name was Swamp and he was a formidable adversary at well over 6 ft and hair this guy really had hair. From his legions of fans he had recruited what he called his "Pit crew from hell" and they were really building a Harley Davidson powered Drag Unicycle with a new design. The idea was to use all stock Harley parts but to bolt everything together so that none of these valuable parts would be damaged by welding. A stock frame and rear wheel was the starting point, a steel sled was attached to the rear by splitting an old girder front end in half and bolting it to the rear shock mounts a set of handlebars were added then a dresser front fender some spray paint and wa la a thing of beauty. Next a 1000cc Sportster engine was installed and it was time for a test run. Did I say test run ? Test crash was more the truth..It was quickly discovered that the old Harley engine was far to heavy to be counterbalanced by the weight of the pilot. This problem was solved by simply welding over 300lbs. of steel teeth from a payloader to the sled. With the addition of the added weight to the rear it was felt that a skid plate would be unnecessary. |

Sidecar and Scheskie had solved the nose diving problems by adding a large wooden sled to the rear of the Desert Stormer This brought the C/G down and seemed to eliminate the death spirial. An early attempt at steering was accomplished by allowing the front to articulate from the sled thru a single bolt between the two halves. Traction was increased by cutting the tire while wheel hop was eliminated thru the use of a monoshock. A new coat of paint was added and the beast renamed "WEE BEE BAD". |

On Friday of Bikeweek 1992 the 2nd A.N.U.S. Nationals were held at Annemarie's Turtle campgrounds. Willy had created Founder T shirts to commerate the occasion and each Team would be allowded 3 attempts at the record. Well Sidecar and Scheskie had really done their homework as Scheskie made 3 perfect runs the best being 4.21sec a full second quicker than the previous year. |

Next up was Swamp on his Beast the "SWAMP SPECIAL" In a last minute decision his Pit Crew from Hell had rejected the single bolt steering theory beliving that their pilot could muscle the beast to the finish line but after two disappointing launches of their pilot due to severe hooking the team of Swamp and the Pit Crew from Hell fired the most mind boggling run ever witnessed. Setting his beast at a 45 degree angle to the track Swamps run could best be described as a trick shot by a bowler with a landing by a stunt man and it all came together with a new world record run of 3.75sec.which now threw Harley Davidson into the lead. The event was covered by both American and Japanese press. |
